During spring 2008, the Institution for Landscape Architecture, in co-operation with Naturvårdsverket, initiated a survey in the districts of Skåne. In the survey, four out of eight park characters were examined, and it was observed that not only was it difficult interpreting these characters, but it was also presented with difficulties separating ''Lustgården'' and ''Allmänningen''. The purpose of this master thesis in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Psychology is twofold. Firstly, a theoretical framework will be constructed on the thee characters ''Allmänningen'', ''Lustgården'' and ''Centrum, festen''. Secondly, empirical data will be gathered in these environments. Finally, these two components will be joined to seek a deeper understanding on how to optimize the meaning of the conceptions to be able to use them in physical planning starting from people's needs and health. The results shows that the environment of "Allmänningen" is about prospect; to see, to have a general view and aperture, which is a guarantee for us being able to investigate our world visually. Our intrinsic curiosity gives us an opportunity to expand our competence and our identity.''Lustgården'' is about refuge; being hidden, intimacy, feeling safe and on a subconscious level give us an opportunity to feel being in control and to return to a safe base. ''Centrum, festen'' is about meeting people in official places, being seen and acknowledged through spending time in one another's company. "Allmänningen", "Lustgården" and "Centrum, festen" are mainly related to what is offered in a certain site (eg, sports-, and swimming facilities as well as the ability to grow plants), which is commonly referred to as affordance. These three concepts also describe a site's characteristics, for instance whether it is perceived as being an open space or close quarters. They also relate to experiences such as comfort, privacy, uniformity, understandability and manageability. In separating characters there is an initial problem when the places are similar to each other. For instance, city parks are multi-dimensional, which creates the perception of either ''Lustgården'' or ''Allmänningen'' because we perceive that they have a balance between symbols of both prospect and refuge.
