Abstract

Baled silage has become one of the most important conservation methods in Sweden. Because we take our grass as silage we get the quality and the good hygenic that we would like to have. Silage has become a big buisiness also in the horse feeding where many of the breeders have changed from the hay to the hay-silage. The difference between regular silage and haysilage is that the hay silage is dryer (60-70%DM). The hay-silage has also put higher demands on machinery and wrapping material since the grass gets sharper and harder to press together real hard. The main reason for the test was to compare two different systems for wrapping, the new Cross Pac and conventional. The test also compared different stretching (70 and 120%) of the film and different number of layers. The results is shown in the conclusions below. The bales that was used in the test were dried to about 70% DM, and were taken from the same area on the field, this because we would like to get as little difference as possible between the bales. Conclution. • There were no difference in use of wrapping material (kg/bale) between CrossPac and conventional wrapping. • It is better to have higher stretching (120%) and more layers when using the same amount (kg) of film, compared to 70% stretching with less number of layers • The stretching of the film is the major factor for the use of film (kg/bale). • There are no difference in losses and mouldgrowth between 70% and 120% stretching of the film, when using the samme amunt (Kg) of film. • The bales wrapped with Cross Pac had less losses and were more airtight than bales wrapped with conventional technique.
