Abstract

The background of this study is the fact that it nowadays is more common to grow wheat after wheat. Usually we plow every autumn to remove the straw, and we wanted to study the effect of alternative methods to do it. We have done this experiment to answer the question if no tillage is better than conventional plowing. The results of the field experiment indicate that there is a link between plant establishment and the choice of equipment, but also a higher weed pressure in experimental plots with only ground tillage. The equipments which left much straw on the top of the ground the problems with fungi were more severe. The big difference of the plant establishment was connected to the big difference of the establishment costs. The equipments used in our experiment were Väderstad Carrier, Kongskilde Delta Stubbharv, Väderstads Cultus+Excellent, Överums Växelplog, Dalbos Dinco, Kvernelands Ecomat, Blaxta Cultivation plow and direct drilling with Väderstads Rapid 400C. Best plant establishment was for Kverneland Ecomat and Blaxta cultivation plow. Worst plant establishment were for direct drilling and Väderstad Carrier because the tillage was too bad. The highest establishment costs were for Väderstad Carrier because we had to drive twice on the same field. The costs are 1156 kr/ha and for fungicides 620 kr/ha with a total cost of 1776 kr/ha. The lowest establishment costs were for direct drilling and Överums plow with a cost for direct drilling of 406 kr/ha and for fungicides 620 kr/ha with a total cost of 1026 kr/ha. The total cost for plowing was 663 kr/ha and there were no needs for any fungicides.
