Abstract

,

I have always liked nature and I had the conception that all vegetation that is not clearly constructed by man, for example a lawn or a flower bed, is something that nature has done by itself. My eyes were opened for the alternatives when I for the first time heard the expression "nature-like / naturalistic plantation".

The purpose with this work is to find out how much a nature-like plantation really resembles nature, if they are planned to be nature-like or just something used as a green filling. The purpose is also to give an indication to the status of the nature-like plantation.

The work consists of three parts. One historical part that explores the origin to the conception of "nature-like". One part on the contemporary history of the idea of planning nature-like areas in the 70's and 80's. These two parts are exclusively litterature studies. The last part is a summary of a questionnaire that was answered by those responsible for the parks in a few municipalities. The questionnaire was answered in writing by five park directors in four municipalities and verbally by two.

Some conclusions
The historically seen "natural" English park style, which was a reaction to the more strict French style, was not that natural at all and often did greater damage on the existing landscape than the French. The "English" in English Park style is also not unquestionned. Several countries claims to be the first with the "new, natural style".

The litterature available about the most popular years of the nature-like plantations in the 70's and 80's, are written by the most prominent and knowledgeable reserchers of that time. This gives a somewhat idealized image of how nature-like areas should be planned and managed. This idea might not be possible to realize by ordinary municipalities for economical or other reasons.

The questions in the questionnaire were mainly about planning, choosing plants and management. The answeres varied due to the economic resources and location. The most southern municipalities have a wider range of plants to choose from and seemed to be using more exotic plants in their nature-like plantations. Further north mostly Swedish plants were used. In general the nature-like plantation did not seem to have a high status if you look at the low effort put on planning and management.

An important conclusion is also that the resemblance to nature is not in the species used but in the multi-layered structure.
