Abstract

Gothenburg municipality has a lot of natural water. This paper enhances the function and importance of water in the city. It also deals with the problems of sewage water and flooding. Gothenburg has reached an advanced stage of water planning. By developing a Waterplan, the municipality highlight that water has an important position in the urban planning. In the Waterplan all watercourses are considered as units and no overall picture is proposed. This paper describes an overall picture of the watercourses in the municipality. Göta Älv, the moat and the canals are enhanced as structuring elements. The landscape of Gothenburg is grouped into different zones; urban zone, edge zone and countryside zone. Between the urban and the countryside the unique environment of the edge-zone is located. This zone is more built up then the countryside, and the land-use to be found here consists of farmland or woodland. The streams can flow through all of these three zones. This indicates the importance of analyzing the entire watercourse when restorations are made. To apply an ecological approach to the stormwater management, only 125 hectare of pond area is required for the urban environment in Gothenburg. In the most urban areas most ponds are needed, but there is a lack of space. The space, for an ecological approach to the stormwater management, is found in the edge-zone. The edge-zone can therefore act as a cushion to the urban stormwater. Later on when the areas are exploited, a good condition for ecological stormwater system exists already. Osbäcken flows in the edge-zone of the island of Hisingen. The watercourse is heavily restored. Purification ponds equalize the flows of the water, improve the quality of the water and increase the biodiversity. It is important to analyze the entire watercourse and the development of the landscape when water restoration is made. This paper illustrates a plan of the landscape development of Osbäcken. Both housing areas and industrial areas will be constructed. The area will become more densely populated. In the future Osbäcken can function as an important green path to pedestrians and cyclists, but also as a recreation area. All parts are important, for the water system to function. What happens in smaller scale affects the larger scale. To use the natural streams in planning and to manage the stormwater ecologically contributes to a sustainable development. Water should therefore be considered an asset in the urban landscape.
