This study concerns mapping and analysing two different Supply Chains at Setra Group. Setra Group is Sweden's biggest producer of solid wood and is primarily owned by Sveaskog, Mellanskog and LRF. The Company consist of twelve sawmills, five planning mills and an organisation for distribution of building material. This study maps one chain for Swedish Glulam standard beam and one chain for solid pine flooring on export to Japan. The glulam chain is based on spruce as raw material and includes all actors between sawmill and the Swedish building material retailers. The chain for Japan flooring is based on pine and includes actors between sawmill and customers in Japan. This study contains of two market research's made by Setra Group during the spring of 2006 that's been analysed in order to find different customers preferences on service. The study also includes seven interviews made at the different production sites and four that have been made over the phone. The study shows that these two different chains is very differing there ability to perform. The Glulam chain is responsive with short lead times between end user ordering and delivery. This forces the chain to have big volumes of inventory costs related to that and a reduced flexibility. The chain for Japan flooring is more cost effective but needs longer lead times in the delivery out to the customer. Setra Group should in these two chains more clearly define the supply chain strategy so different units in the chain works towards the same goals regarding cost effectiveness and responsiveness. There's also room for improvements in implementing improvement systems that contains of measurement through the whole chain. This measurement will give the actors inputs for further improvements and should be designed like a balanced scorecard to be able to catch different perspectives of the performance. The biggest potentials for improvement is in the interaction between sawmills and the planning mills.
